At least 64 Killed in Rio's Most Extensive Police Raid on Criminal Groups

At least 64 individuals died in a security raid against the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern districts - the most extensive and fatal action in the Brazilian state's history.

Four law enforcement personnel were included in the fatalities during the police action in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, state officials reported. In excess of 80 people were arrested.

Fierce clashes erupted when about 2,500 law enforcement officers moved in on the morning of the operation. The criminal organization countered with armed resistance, setting fire to barriers and using drone-dropped explosives, officials confirmed.

The United Nations human rights body stated it felt "shocked" by the law enforcement raid, calling for "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Raid Aftermath

The area of favelas adjacent to the city's international airport is considered to be the main base of a major illegal networks.

State officials said at least 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Numerous individuals were injured, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Resident Accounts

Residents have compared the hillside area - inhabited by approximately 300,000 individuals - to a "war zone" since the operation began.

Roads remain closed in the entire neighborhood.

Organized Crime Spread

The criminal network has been increasing their territory across the Rio state, expanding narcotics distribution networks and control of the hillside favelas.

Rio's police stated more than 200kg (441lb) of drugs were seized in the mission, together with dozens of firearms.

Raid Preparation

The combined action by different law enforcement agencies comes after a twelve-month inquiry.

Many of the individuals are considered participants in an organization from the Brazilian state who are at the moment taking refuge in the city.

Broader Context

Extensive security missions are not uncommon in the country prior to major international events in the nation.

The United Nations climate conference COP30 is taking place in the northern urban center in November.
