Biden Bowl, Anyone? Meloni to Sell International Gifts for Charity

Relinquishing unneeded presents can be seen as a little discourteous – except if it's done for a noble purpose.

A Philanthropic Clear-Out

The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction a reported 270 items bestowed upon her by international figures while abroad. This unusual assortment reportedly features gifts including a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gilded heels.

The presents, combined, have an approximate value of €800,000. The plan is to auctioned off in a public auction by a Italian fine art auction house. An exact timeline is yet to be set, although the aim is to conduct the sale before Christmas, with the proceeds going to non-profit organizations.

Palazzo Chigi Treasures

The items reportedly kept in a repository on the upper level of Palazzo Chigi. It has been reported that Meloni additionally considering auction off gifts given to her predecessors that have been stored away for years.

A complete inventory remains disclosed, but some insight emerged earlier this year when a comprehensive document of all declared gifts was presented in parliament. The discussion raised if a legal value limit was being respected. Legally, a prime minister must declare presents worth more than €300.

A Global Assortment of Gifts

The collection includes:

  • A silk accessory from the Albanian prime minister, allegedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A sari from Kerala from India's prime minister.
  • A case of jewelry from the Slovakian president.
  • A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
  • A pottery dish from the former US president.
  • A tablet from the Ukrainian president.
  • Watercolour paintings from the Moldovan government.
  • Additional objects including makeup, a skateboard, and several rugs received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Perhaps the most unusual gifts were the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," observers have said.

Political Context

Meloni has been credited, mainly from within her party, with garnering support from foreign leaders and re-establishing Italy as a key protagonist on the international platform once again.

The forthcoming sale represents a unconventional way to handle the protocol gifts that are collected during a time in office.
