Our team is analyzing images and video shared earlier today that show the scene of a reported car bomb blast that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died of his wounds. A probe is under way.
Our starting point to check the site from which the images originated relied on posts indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.
We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow colour of a nearby residential complex seen in the video.
Locating other structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified where the footage were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
