Harvard ex-president Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board
Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is departing from the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a series of electronic messages between him and deceased financier the accused trafficker became public.
The economist remarked in a statement that he was "grateful for the opportunity to have participated, excited about the prospects of the enterprise, and eagerly await observing their progress".
Summers, who once led the Ivy League institution, declared on Monday that he would be stepping back from public commitments due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein.
Message Exchange
The freshly disclosed emails revealed that Summers communicated with Epstein until the eve of Epstein's 2019 detention for alleged human trafficking of young people.
In additional comments, the AI firm said it understood the economist's choice to resign.
"We acknowledge his numerous inputs and the viewpoint he provided to the Board," the organization remarked.
Political Context
This announcement comes after the two houses of Congress decided on Tuesday to approve a legislation that would require the US justice department to release its documents on the case.
The measure will then move to the desk of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. The President has said he plans to approve the bill, after modifying his view on the subject following pressure from his supporters.
Message Details
A collection of Epstein-connected correspondence released by the House Oversight Committee recently included multiple high-profile figures in the financier's previous network, without indicating any legal wrongdoing by those people.
The emails showed that the economist and the financier often met for meals, with the billionaire often seeking to connect the academic to prominent international personalities.
Individual Statement
After the correspondence were released with the public, Summers expressed he accepted "total ownership for my ill-advised decision to maintain communicating with Jeffrey Epstein".
He further stated that he hoped "to rebuild trust and repair bonds with the people nearest to me".
Professional History
Summers served in high-level positions under party leaders; functioning as economic leader under the former president, and as director of the White House economic team under Barack Obama.
He headed the institution from 2001 to 2006 and continues to be a academic there. When declaring his withdrawal from public commitments earlier on this week, he stated he would maintain his teaching commitments.
Additional Consequences
Following the economist's announcement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a progressive research organization in DC where he was a researcher, verified that the economist was no longer associated with the organization.
Summers entered the board of OpenAI, which creates the language model, in last year - following a unsuccessful effort to remove its chief executive Sam Altman.
