Information Available Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

At least 16 individuals perished and over 40 were hurt when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have called a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were admitted to hospital.

The victims are still awaiting officially identified, but investigators think their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who have been identified so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the attack, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, a senior official declared that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message read.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many remain receiving treatment, with a number in a critical state. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
