The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Horror Merging Survival Horror and Among Us Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of intriguing future games, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"It's a unique game where a girl harboring multiple human souls within her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Within her reside four separate personas, each with their own fears and drives. These souls can take over at will, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Based on showcased gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy medical facility, while additional clips show the protagonist exploring a desolate chapel.
A World of Individual Horror
"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to others can trigger something primal within us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are unique to every individual."
The core mechanic involves managing the persona that emerges at any given moment. However, these identities will change involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the protagonist in succession. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by orderlies who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the waiting room have enormous blooms growing from their heads are. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is real."
Once players believes a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, because each soul can lie or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The final entity remaining might be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
