The White Sox Sign Japanese Slugger Munetaka Murakami on a Lucrative Multi-Million Dollar Deal.

In a significant move for their rebuilding roster, the Chicago White Sox have signed Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a lucrative contract with the accomplished player.

Financial Terms and Incentives

The deal grants a seven-figure signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, combined with annual pay of sixteen million for the 2026 season and $17 million for the 2027 year.

Notably, Murakami's compensation may grow based on accolade achievements in 2026:

  • $1 million for winning the Most Valuable Player award.
  • $500,000 for placing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
  • A quarter-million for finishing in the top ten.
  • $250,000 for being named the ROY honor.

His deal also stipulates that he cannot be sent to the farm system without his permission and allows him to become a free agent at the termination of the deal. Further benefits include a team-provided interpreter and flight reimbursement between the U.S. and Japan.

Compensation and Franchise History

As part of the acquisition, Chicago owes a posting fee of over $6.5 million to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's NPB. The Swallows get a additional payment of any triggered salary escalators.

Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth-ever Japanese to suit up for the South Siders, following pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu once managed Murakami while both were in Japan.

Career Highlights

Murakami, a left-handed hitter who will turn 26 on February 2nd, enters a young group of offensive players in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are finished with a last-place season, placing at the bottom in the American League Central but showing a 19-game improvement from the previous campaign.

Having earned Central League MVP honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami is renowned for a record-breaking 2022 season where he launched 56 home runs, eclipsing the all-time record for a NPB hitter formerly held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the youngest player ever to win Japan's prestigious batting Triple Crown.

His most recent NPB campaign was shortened to just 56 appearances due to an oblique injury. Despite recording often, he batted .273 with 22 home runs and 47 driven in.

Over his eight-season tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has accumulated a .270 career batting average with 246 HRs, 647 RBIs, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in 892 games. Initially playing mainly at first, he has since transitioned to third base.

Global Stage Success

Murakami's big-game performance were on global view during the 2023 WBC. In the semifinal against Mexico, he hit a game-ending double that scored teammates for a dramatic 6-5 victory. The very next day in the final against the United States, he slugged a game-tying home run in the early innings, helping Japan's subsequent championship win.

The lefty slugger is scheduled to be formally introduced at a press conference on the coming Monday.
