Tuchel Wants Jude Bellingham's Passion Provided England's Star Leaves Egotism at the Door.
One snub did the trick. A second one and it would have started to look spiteful from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is far too wily not to understand that winning the World Cup will likely need the involvement of Jude Bellingham, even if it is also on the midfielder to blend into the strategic frameworks and squad hierarchies essential with the national team now that he is back in the manager's warm embrace.
The manager seeks Bellingham's edge, his passion, but it is a matter of channeling it constructively. Personal talent is important but the squad know from bitter experience that there is a cost when stardom prevails. Still, a statement has been delivered.
The midfielder was given food for thought after not being selected of the recent team selection. He observed England qualify at the tournament without him. He saw Morgan Rogers perform brilliantly as a high-pressing No 10. He listened as the coach mention valuing the squad's spirit and ethics. Naturally, Bellingham has reacted in winning fashion, scoring crucial goals for Real Madrid versus Barcelona and the Italian side. He had to be picked; another omission would have left his World Cup hopes in serious doubt.
The hope is that Tuchel will have a midfielder concentrating on intimidating opponents rather than teammates. After all, in purely sporting terms, there is no value to starting a conflict with one of the best players in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period on the sidelines has shown him that playing for one's country is a precious, uncertain thing. The coach, for his part, can now offer support for the 22-year-old after proving that he is unafraid to take tough decisions.
“There is no problem with him, there is no problem with the character,” Tuchel stated. “Jude possesses the edge. You need that kind of fire to reach the heights that he reached. We all must help him and establish a setting which he can [have] his drive towards opponents and in pursuit of success we are striving for as a team.”
The star dominated much of the focus at the manager's selection reveal for this month’s meaningless matches versus Serbia and Albania. Any other news? Well, how about another talent? Here is another prodigious No 10 requiring love and guidance. Foden has not played for England since March and has struggled to hit the heights recently but the boss had to consider the 25-year-old after his display in his club's victory against Borussia Dortmund recently.
The question, though, is how to use the attacking talents at England’s disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eze deserve their spots and there will be a strong case to pick another youngster once he is fit after a fitness issue. Would taking five No 10s to the tournament be too many? Gareth Southgate never found the right blend at Euro 2024. He compromised by squeezing both stars into the same XI, restricting Harry Kane’s game as a result.
It seems unlikely Tuchel making the same mistake if it disrupts the attacking balance. There is room for one No 10, with fast wide players on the flanks. Clarity helps. Bellingham is in as a No 10. The new call-up, selected for the first time, is a No 8 and the recalled Adam Wharton will compete with another player as a defensive midfielder. Additionally, there is no position on the wing for Foden, who has to be through the middle. Tuchel wants him close to the striker. “It is illogical to ask Phil: ‘We want you on the pitch but there’s no space on your best position, can you play the left side? Or the right wing?” he stated. “Phil is to feature in the advanced midfield role, in the middle of the pitch. I've long had this vision regarding him for years. In my view it suits him the most.”
Tuchel conceded there are times when Foden has not looked himself in an England shirt. “You feel almost like, ‘Is he truly happy? And someone of his caliber who has this childish joy to play football, then obviously an issue exists, whether it's his role, the environment, it's unclear.
“In my opinion he is additionally accustomed to representing his club in a specific system, with a defined role. I think he profits greatly from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? Where am I supposed to accelerate the match? What are my to defensive duties?”
The manager mentioned Bellingham bursting through for tap-ins and the other netting goals from outside the box. He added he has a extended list of many candidates. Several players, Myles Lewis-Skelly, the goalkeeper and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been omitted. Nico O’Reilly is recognized for his fine form for Manchester City at defense. Intrigue abounds.
Leaving out of the striker means there is no direct replacement for the captain in this squad. Fascinatingly, Tuchel suggested deploying the playmaker as a deep-lying striker against Serbia or Albania. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, the midfielder and Jarrod Bowen are alternatives should he be unavailable. Since the place is booked, this is a moment for trying new things.
Meanwhile, it is also a moment to get Kane’s relationship with Bellingham going. It's surprising that one must look back to Bellingham setting up Kane to score in a friendly win against the Scots in over a year ago to find the sole instance in 35 games for England when the duo linked up for a goal. The coach will be aware that the two stars only passed to each other once during England’s draws with Denmark and Slovenia at the Euros. The connection is lacking.
“At this point eventually it becomes the responsibility of the players,” he said. He is not afraid to deliver home truths. There is still a sense of Bellingham under scrutiny. He cannot even be assured to start against Serbia and Albania. The manager wants him onside but he will be monitoring him carefully. Leave the ego at the door. It will make a very strong England team into an more effective one.
