Powerful winter winds caused walls to collapse upon fragile tents sheltering Palestinians displaced by conflict in Gaza, claiming the lives of at least four people. This tragedy underscores the perilous situation that persist after over two years of intense bombardment and critical lack of humanitarian assistance.

Truce Offers No Respite from Severe Elements

While a truce has been in effect from October, humanitarian organizations report that residents do not have the adequate shelter required to survive recurring cold-weather events.

Medical staff at Gaza City's largest medical facility, which received the victims, said on Tuesday that the dead include two women, a young female, and a male adult.

Separately, the Gaza health ministry announced on the same day that a one-year-old boy died of extreme cold during the night.

"The world has enabled us to witness loss of life in all its forms," stated a family member following the funeral. "It’s true the bombing may have temporarily stopped, but we have seen every conceivable cause of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Crushed in Shelter Collapse

As per Shifa hospital, three members of a one household — 72-year-old a man, his teenage relative, and his daughter-in-law — were killed when an 26-foot tall wall collapsed on top of their dwelling in a area near the sea of the city. No fewer than 5 additional people were injured in the event.

Family members on Tuesday started clearing the rubble that had entombed their family and reconstructing the tent shelters for those who remained.

Aid Distribution and Continuing Crisis

The UN and its aid organization allies were handing out shelter kits, plastic sheeting, blankets and clothes as well as nutrition and hygiene items throughout Gaza, stated the relevant UN coordination body.

The majority of the population reside in improvised shelters since their houses were turned into ruins during the war. Humanitarian organizations say not enough shelter materials are reaching Gaza under the ceasefire.

Fatality Figures Since the Ceasefire

Local health authorities, which is part of the Hamas-run government, reports more than four hundred and forty individuals have been fatally shot by Israeli fire and their bodies brought to hospitals after the ceasefire began. The authority maintains comprehensive casualty data that are seen as largely accurate by UN agencies and independent experts.

James Elder, representing the UN children's fund, said on that day that no fewer than one hundred minors below eighteen years old – 60 boys and 40 females – had been lost their lives since the ceasefire began because of military operations, such as drone strikes, air raids, tank shelling and use of bullets. These numbers, he explained, represented incidents where sufficient details had been compiled to justify documentation, but the overall count is believed to be higher. He added that hundreds of minors had been injured.

"While 'bombings and shootings have decreased' during the ceasefire, they have not ceased," Elder told journalists at a press conference in the Swiss city by video from Gaza City. "So what the international community now calls calm would be viewed as a catastrophe in any other place," he said.

Another Winter of Struggle

Gaza’s residents of more than two million individuals has been struggling to keep the cold weather and storms away while enduring shortages of assistance and a lack of more substantial transitional shelter, which is urgently needed during the colder season. This marks the 3rd cold season after the conflict between Israel and Hamas began on a date in late 2023, when fighters stormed into southern Israel and killed approximately 1,200 individuals and took hostage two hundred and fifty-one more into Gaza.

Gaza’s health ministry says more than 71,400 people have been fatally injured in the subsequent military campaign.
